The American grog is a mixed drink that was created by sailors and workers in New England. The ingredients were rum, water, sugar and lime juice. This drink was known to be a favorite of US President George Washington.
The earliest mention of this American Grog drink was written by a British sailor named John Cox who wrote about drinking it in his journal from March 1773. The first documented recipe for the cocktail can be found in the 1806 edition of Jerry Thomas’s book “The Bartender’s Guide”.
Variations: Mixed drinks with similar recipes have been made for centuries all over the world. For example, some people will add ginger ale or pineapple juice to their grog recipe to give it more flavor.
