Ancient Mariner

The Ancient Mariner is a cocktail with a rich history. The original recipe was created in the 1890s by a man named Samuel Smith who was a bartender at the famous Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City. Smith invented this concoction to commemorate the sinking of the HMS “Ancient Mariner” off the coast of Ireland back in 1797. In fact, there are many variations of this cocktail recipe but they all have one thing in common: gin, dry vermouth, maraschino liqueur and orange juice as its main ingredients. This is a cocktail that I like, at least for this time of year, because it's not too alcoholic. It's very tropical and works well in warm weather or with fish dishes.
