The Brandy Swizzle is a classic, refreshing cocktail. The history of this cocktail starts in the 1800s on the island of Barbados. Sugar was a huge export on Barbados and it was one of the most successful colonies in the Caribbean. Rum was also produced on the island and it became a very important part of trade with America. The Brandy Swizzle cocktail is a prime example of how rum and sugar were used differently to produce different drinks.
The story starts with a man named Richard Seale who owned a sugar cane plantation in Barbados. He would use his sugar cane to make rum that he would export from from his island home. The Brandy Swizzle cocktail is one of his most famous drinks and it has been used for over 200 years now, thanks to Seale’s ingenuity. The cherry brandy gives the drink its distinctive flavor and reddish color.
