South of the Border is one of most popular mixed drinks in America It has an alcoholic drink, which contains tequila reposado, coffee liqueur, lime juice (freshly squeezed), egg white (pasteurised) and garnish with coffee beans. This is a drink that originated in the Mexican-American War of 1846. The story goes that one day during the war, a glass of whiskey and lemonade was made and offered to General Zachary Taylor. General Taylor was said to have quipped, “I’ll take this drink south of the border.”
The general had apparently acknowledged the differences between his troops and those who were fighting in Mexico. The General was an American with an army of Americans who were drinking alcohol while in Mexico it was against their law for anyone but priests to drink alcohol.
Ingredients
1 ounce gold or silver tequila
1 ounce Sambuca liqueur
1 ounce vodka
⅙ ounce lime cordial
⅙ ounce lime juice
⅙ ounce club soda
Crushed ice
Recipe
1. Fill a Collins glass with crushed ice.
2. Add all ingredients to the glass.
3. Stir well and sip with a straw.
