Symphony

The symphony is a classic cocktail that made its first appearance in the 1950s. It is a mixture of gin, vodka, and dry vermouth. The symphony has been mixed from many recipes but typically contains those three ingredients. Early recipes for the symphony have been published by David A. Embury as early as 1948 and as late as 1955. In 1958, Trader Vic published some of his own recipes for the symphony too. According to Jerry Thomas' “How To Mix Drinks” the recipe was originally called "Symphony" because it needed to be "so well balanced that there was not a single false note".
