The original Alexander No. 1 is considered to have been invented in the twentieth century, as evidenced by a recipe in Hugo Ensslin's 1916 Recipes for Mixed Drinks. The original Alexander drink was made with gin, crème de cacao liqueur, and cream in equal proportions. Other spirits were replaced for gin over time, with brandy being the most popular.
It is the best gin based cocktail, an old classic with a twist. The drink has a nice sweetness to it, but can be very dangerous for you if you have too much of it. It is garnished with freshly grated Nutmeg.
