The Salty Dog cocktail is a refreshing drink that can be created with either gin or vodka mixed with grapefruit juice, grenadine syrup, and lemon-lime soda. It was invented in the 1960s by Walter Chell to serve at the Polo Lounge of the Beverly Hills Hotel.
It is unclear how it came to be known as "Salty Dog" or what the significance of the name may be. The cocktail originally featured vodka but gin became more popular during Prohibition, making it more likely that "dog" refers to gin rather than salt.
