The drink was born sometime in 1954, when Ramon 'Monchito' Marrero, a bartender at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico created it for Hollywood producer Richard Zanuck and his wife Marilyn Monroe. In 1959, Marrero published his recipe in the "San Juan Star" newspaper.
