The Vodka Salty Dog has been on a steady climb toward the top of all-time favorite drinks. It's an amazing mixer and on its own, it's basically a party in your mouth (or more accurately, your nose). There are a number of different theories about how the Salty Dog cocktail originated. According to one popular theory, the cocktail was invented by an American bartender named John Collins in 1907. John also apparently owned a bar named The Salty Dog.
Another theory claims that it was created in France in 1922 by an American bartender who had just returned from Russia with vodka in tow. His idea was to mix it with grapefruit juice for a refreshing drink when mixed with ice.
